Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Parks System Master Plan and how is it created?
Master planning is an important element of focusing county resources to citizen needs and desires. Master planning allows the Parks & Recreation Department to assess the highest needs of a majority of the population and decide how best to maintain the current park properties and plan for new development on future parkland. The Master Plan is created through citizen input and the help of county officials and specialized consultants that analyze data and write the documents based upon all factors on the process.

Why does the Parks Department need a Master Plan since the County just completed the Platte Profile Plan?
Platte Profile established a new vision and a new set of “big-picture” goals for all areas of county government, including parks and recreation. The update of the 2000 Parks System Master Plan was one of these goals from Platte Profile. The update process will continue to refine and focus in on the highest needs of county residents, and develop specific action steps to achieve the goals.

Who is involved in Parks Master Planning?
The Platte County Parks & Recreation Department works with BWR Corp team members that elicit citizen input through citizen committees, focus groups, public meetings and statistically valid opinion surveys. Citizens are welcome to give their input at any time through public meetings or the Public Forum page on this website.

How can I get involved?
The County Commission would like all county citizens to take time to give their thoughts, ideas and input into the next Parks System Master Plan. One way to accomplish this is by going to the Public Forum page and leaving your comments. Another way is by attending one of the Public Meetings. The meetings dates are listed on the Schedule & Public Meetings page.

What is the Citizens Team?
The Citizens Team is a group of residents from all demographic areas of the Platte County that will help identify the key issues facing the future of the parks development in the County.

When and where are the meetings?
Check the Schedule & Public Meetings page to get the current schedule of meetings.

Can I provide input without attending the public meetings?
All input is appreciated. If you don’t wish to leave comments on the website or attend a public meeting, send the Parks Department a letter to: Platte County Parks & Recreation, 415 Third Street, Platte City, MO 64079.

How long will the Master Plan process take?
The process to update the plan should be complete by February 2009.

Once the Master Plan is complete, how will it be implemented?
Under the direction of the County Commission, the Parks and Recreation Department staff and Board of Parks Commissioners will begin implementing the goals and action steps of the plan. The County will continue to work with like-minded community partners to leverage county resources and strengths in this process.
