Message from the County Commission

Less than 10 years ago Platte County had very few opportunities for families to enjoy a day at the park, take a walk on a trail or improve their personal health and wellness. In 1999 a group of citizens looked at every square inch of the county and saw a lot of need, and a lot of potential.

Today the results of the first ever Parks System Master Plan can be seen throughout Platte County. The joggers on the Prairie Creek Greenway trail, the child on the water slide at the Community Center, the church group enjoying a picnic at the Platte Ridge Park shelter, or the baseball team winning a game at the Tiffany Hills Sports Complex. Each one of them, day after day, is testament to the vision from the original parks plan to improve our quality of life.

We are very proud of these accomplishments and thankful for the support and confidence shown by the voters in passing the first ever sales tax dedicated to parks and recreation. With most of the goals accomplished, Platte County is once again engaging the community to help us update the plan for parks, trails, greenways and recreational opportunities for the next 5 to 20 years.

First and foremost this will be a citizen driven plan based on the highest needs and priorities of the community. We need your input and participation to shape the plan for the parks and amenities of the future. Platte County is a fast growing community and we need your feedback on new partnerships and how we can creatively and responsibly take care of what we have and meet the challenges that lie ahead.

Our planning will get off to a running start with the recently adopted Platte Profile Plan which included a comprehensive review of our vision and goals for the future. In addition a dedicated citizens committee has already been formed to help us guide the planning from beginning to end. Numerous opportunities will be available for you to speak out and give input including public meetings, written surveys, focus groups that will meet in all areas of the county, and this website. All citizen input and perspectives will help our consultant team, the citizens committee and county officials identify the highest needs and priorities for the parks system.

This site contains more information about our planning process, history of the parks effort in Platte County, and a public forum for an immediate opportunity to give us your ideas. We hope you will come back and visit this site often for updates to the planning process and to let us know how we are doing. This is your plan for the future of parks, we invite you to take full advantage of it.
